Beyond Key West where the waters from the Atlantic Ocean meet the
Gulf of Mexico, each year great schools of fish congregate in an
area called the Marquesas. The challenge is to catch world record
size fish on light tackle. Glen Lau and Flip Pallot will share
information on how fishermen can have the same adventure.
Beyond Key West, Florida the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico meet
bringing a great variety of fish species within miles of each other.
The Atlantic is the highway for pelagic fish such as sailfish and
marlin. Gulf wrecks attract cobia, snapper and permit. Groupers can
be found year round.
An island called Marquesas Island, located 30 miles west of Key
West, attracts the shallow water flats fish such as permit, tarpon,
barracudas, king mackerel, sharks and bonefish. Reefs just off the
island hold large schools of bait fish which attract numerous
species of saltwater fish.
Marquesas Island can only be reached by boat and there are no
accommodations on the island.
Key West has numerous hotels and motels but reservations are
still necessary for weekends. Several fishermen guide out of Key
West.
The guide that Glen and Flip worked with was: Bill Oliver "
305-745-1759. His rates are $450 a day for his light tackle boat
which will accommodate up to three people and $350 a day to fish
from his Flats Skiff which will accommodate two people.
